Great Model Railroad Backdrops A well thought out model railway background is an important part of landscape architecture that should not be overlooked. Here's a guide to choosing the best background for your train. One of the losers I've seen over the years is when a model has a beautiful train layout with a lot of attention to detail and a back that looks almost like a reflection. It really detracts from the whole look. Don't fall into the trap of a random background for your railroad. Do it yourself You do not have to be a skilled artist to be able to paint your own landscape, but you have to practice. If you decide to do it yourself, start training on the billboard until you are happy with your technique. Be sure to choose the right colors to give a seamless transition from 3-D to 2-D. Choose a spectrum of green, brown and gray that reflects the colors of the selected foam products you already use for your soil protection and rocks. You can keep the background pretty simple and still achieve a good look. You basically need three elements: hills, sky and trees. The hills should gently tilt up and down, and they will be speckled through with different trees. Of course, the sky above needs clouds, so survey images and basic cloud painting techniques online. Use digital photos If you have a sense of photography, you can create your own back with your own digital photos. Go to the great outdoors and find the right scene that you think would be an appropriate backdrop for your trains. Set the camera on a tripod to stabilize it and then take a series of side-by-side pictures, be careful not to catch the whole landscape. These can be printed on wallpaper and attached to the wall with paste. The results are amazing. Be sure to request mold resistant wallpaper. Panoramic murals A third option is to use panoramic views murals scaled to the appropriate size for your railroad. These are professional photographs printed on wallpaper or vinyl wall banner material. You can choose between cityscapes, rocks or scenes with rolling hills. Be sure to measure the length of your layout so that you are not brief. Again, if you go for wallpaper, use mold resistant. You have spent countless hours on your model railroad. Invest some time and finish the look of your entire layout with an excellent model railroad background. It will not only complement your existing landscape, it will be a great finish that really completes your railroad.
